ECAC Power Ratings – Jan. 25

ECAC Hockey logo

At a Glance: Clarkson remains atop the league with a 4-0 shutout of Brown and a 4-2 win at Yale. Cornell’s rating jumped up this week on the strength of a shutout of Harvard and a 5-1 win against Dartmouth. St. Lawrence lost both ends of its road trip, but made the 3-2 loss at Yale look closer than it really was. The Elis had 101(!!!!) shot attempts against just 48 for the Saints; that Yale only got three goals is nothing short of astonishing.

Conference Ratings:

ECAC Indexed Rating
Clarkson 119.31
Cornell 112.2
Quinnipiac 108.38
Yale 107.43
Harvard 103.09
Dartmouth 101.79
Union 101.1
Princeton 95.18
Brown 92.82
Colgate 90.5
RPI 87.4
SLU 80.81

Non-Conference Play: Quinnipiac edged Boston University on the road and won a game they should win at home against Holy Cross. The Bobcats overall rating is padded by their weak non-conference schedule, but like I said last week, someone has to schedule non-conference games against AIC and Holy Cross.

The (Albany) Mayor’s Cup was cancelled due to the major winter storm that hit the Capital Region last week, so RPI and Union didn’t meet up in that non-conference game at Times Union Center. That game is now scheduled for Jan. 29.

Overall Ratings:

Overall Indexed Rating
Quinnipiac 127.98
Clarkson 123.2
Union 116.47
Cornell 107.29
Harvard 105.19
Yale 102.91
Princeton 93.55
Dartmouth 93.04
Brown 89.29
Colgate 82.44
RPI 80.59
SLU 78.06

Last Week’s Picks: I thought St. Lawrence could beat Brown, and that would’ve been a good return on the money line (+295 – bet $100 to win $295) had they pulled it off, but I was right on the other three Friday games. On Saturday, I missed on Quinnipiac beating BU but had all the conference games correct.

This Week’s Picks: I can’t find any lines on tonight’s games right now, and I have to get this post up before 10 a.m., so I’ll just pick ’em straight up.

Friday, Jan. 25

St. Lawrence at Dartmouth EC 7:00 pm ET
Clarkson at Harvard  EC 7:00 pm ET
Brown at Rensselaer  EC 7:00 pm ET
Yale at Union  EC 7:00 pm ET
Cornell at Colgate  EC 7:30 pm ET

The most interesting matchup on Friday is Yale at Union – they’re both above average, according to the ratings, with the Elis holding a slight edge. RPI is an upset pick over Brown, going by the numbers, but I’m convinced that the Skating Slide Rules are a primed for a good finish to the conference season.

Saturday, Jan. 26

Colgate at Cornell  EC 7:00 pm ET
Clarkson at Dartmouth  EC 7:00 pm ET
St. Lawrence at Harvard  EC 7:00 pm ET
Yale at Rensselaer  EC 7:00 pm ET
Brown at Union  EC 7:00 pm ET

This Saturday slate is like picking a match race between Justify and Zippy Chippy. If I were in Vegas or Atlantic City at Monmouth Park, I’d parlay these five games for $10.

Tuesday, Jan. 29

(1) Rensselaer vs Union  NC 7:00 pm ET
(1) Mayor’s Cup (Albany, NY) – Rescheduled from 1/19

Yeah, I picked Union in the Mayor’s Cup originally, partly because it’s hard to beat a team three times in one year, and the Collar City Engineers have been the Dutchboys twice already this season. Primed off a win against Brown, though, I could see RPI making it three in a year against Union.
